桜が生きていた記憶を残す
In this project I sought to preserve the memory of cherry trees that once lived through clothing and sound.
Together with a musician I created a space in which people could feel the presence of cherry trees that had been felled due to reasons such as age.
桜の木から桜色に染め、服にする
Using cherry wood from these trees, I dyed fabrics cherry blossom pink and transformed them into garments.
命を終えてもなお、再び花を咲かせてく
Even after their lives have ended the cherry trees can bloom anew.
それぞれの桜に
見守ってきた人の想いがある。
記憶を含んだ特別な存在れる桜
Each cherry tree carries the thoughts and feelings of the people who watched over it. They are special beings filled with memories.
それぞれの服には
桜の名前が付いているれる桜
To honour this, I sewed tags onto the garments indicating which tree was used to dye it, and attached wooden buttons made from the same cherry tree onto each piece.
反対に桜は
どんな気持ちで生きていたんだろう
I also wondered what kind of feelings the cherry trees themselves might have felt while living.
桜はどんな音を聴いて過ごしていたんだろう
Did they arch over a flowing river, or watch over a bus route, or bring joy to someone's garden?
桜の記憶を音としても残す
I layered guitar melodies over environmental sounds recorded in places where the cherry trees once stood, preserving their memories through sound as well.
I believe the added melodies helped awaken memories.
桜を含め多くの出会いと別れの中で
きらきらした記憶をお守りにして生きているところがある。
Throughout my life, with its many encounters and farewells that have often included cherry trees, I treasure [these/my] sparkling memories like a precious amulet.
思い出は誰にも奪えないもの。
Our memories cannot be taken from us.
自分が覚えていれば
And as long as we recall them, they continue to exist.
